The birthday party is here! This term the theme for the birthday parties is Traditional Chinese Folk Culture; for example, October highlights ‘Tuan Shan (Oval Fan)’ which was a popular handcraft in ancient China. Therefore the October birthday children and their parents learned to make ‘Tuan Shan’ at the party.
Tuan Shan, also known as Gong Shan or Wan Shan, originating in China, is a oval fan with a stick to hold. It first appeared in the Shang Dynasty and soon became popular among noble ladies and literati. Over thousands of years, it has been inherited into the traditional Chinese culture until today.
As the birthday song played, birthday children and their parents arrived at the party. Teacher Kevin and Teacher Jane started the party by introducing ‘Tuan Shan’. Children listened carefully and watched a video on how to make the fan by hand. They were fascinated by all kinds of beautiful fans.
Next, it was time to make fans! The oval fan of natural silk, wood stick, colourful embossment & leaves, and special glue etc. With all the materials ready, children let their imagination run wild on the fans. Whereas, parents enjoyed the activity and they were ready to help children in the creation.
Let’s enjoy the wonderful work that the birthday children and parents have done together. There were wooden frames for the fans allowing children to put them up as a decoration at home.
With the children’s laughter, the birthday party ended, with happy memories and a traditional Chinese round fan. The children and parents not only left with a good memory, at the same time, allwed the children know and love Chinese traditional culture, set up the consciousness of national cultural inheritance, and to carry national intangible cultural heritage.
