实践活动 - English Perspective – November
This month in K3 our unit of inquiry was about protecting the environment. We looked at the different kinds of environments and how we use them for our benefit. For example, the ocean is an environment that provides us with leisure, food, and transportation. Then we inquired about the different forms of human activity that hurt our environment. The students now understand the different types of pollution (air, water, ground, noise, light) and their negative impact on the environment. Finally, we focused on how we can change our lifestyle to help the environment, focusing on the 3 R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). The students took great pride in sharing action photos at home of recycling plastic bottles, reducing electricity, reusing boxes for art work, or riding their bicycle instead of driving a car. For our summative assessment task, the students created posters and taught the K2 students the importance of protecting our environment and what we need to do to help out! During the unit, we also took a field trip to the Shanghai Science & Technology Museum where we explored a number of exhibits about pollution, the natural environment and earthquakes!
In English literacy, The Teachers’ College Reading and Writing Project is moving along and the students have done a great job adapting to a new program. In our readers’ workshops, the students have plenty of leveled readers to choose from as they develop their ‘super reader powers’. Twice a week we introduce a new reading strategy for the students to improve their reading. Following a mini-lesson, the students then get time to practice this new skill in private and with a partner. The students have also been very enthusiastic during writers’ workshops. They are learning to use our word walls to write sight words correctly and are developing great confidence in their phonetic spelling for words they don’t know how to spell. Finally, the students always look forward to our daily read-aloud and poem study, all a part of our balanced literacy program!
This month in K2C has been very busy! This month the children enjoyed November birthday party, a trip to the Pearl Tower and learnt a variety of new vocabulary. K2C have been learning about houses, so we decided to go to the Pearl Tower museum and explore the different houses from around the world. The children expressed how much they loved seeing what the different houses were made out of! K2C have been learning how to read the sight words and enjoyed the new games that were given to them! We are also practicing hard for the Christmas show and they are looking forward to performing on stage in front of their parents! I am excited to see how much they are growing more and more everyday!
This month has been a very exciting month for K1C!
With the transportation unit, we had the opportunity to look into different types of transportation, including working vehicles. We even had the opportunity to look at a real working police car up close with a lovely policeman! The policeman pointed out all the different parts on the car and showed us how the siren worked, the children even had a change to sit inside and have look. Then the policeman showed us what he carries on his belt and patiently explained how each item was used to stop criminals.
This month we also had a birthday celebration for our November children. During the celebration, the children enjoyed wonderful performances and learned all about the American holiday “Thanks giving”.
The children have also been working very hard on their English this month and have learned a lot of new songs and poems. We have listened to the rhythm that rhyming gives to poetry and how we can break a poem up into and put it together again. Every child has been given their very own poetry books filled with the wonderful poems. We learned that our books have a front cover, a back cover and even a title! The children were then able to go home and impress their teacher and parents by sharing the poems they learned in class.
I am proud of K1C for everything they have already achieved and I know that this is going to be a wonderful year!
